Hey Jasman – what an amazing idea for your Genius Hour Project!! I think that it was a fantastic idea to learn sign language during this project as this new learning helps to promote the understanding and acceptance of the language, especially for your future in teaching (you never know when you may need to use it!).
Star 1: First of all, I love the layout of your blog posts!! You have included so many different gifs, photos, videos, and bitmoji's, which helped to enhance your content and give your blog a nice personal touch.
Star 2: I really like your approach for this project and love how you included videos of yourself to show the various words that you learned, as well as how you included your most and least favourite signs/words of the week!
Wish: While I love how you included short videos in your weekly postings, I think it would have been a cool idea to have recorded a video of yourself to show the process of you learning these different words/letters for one of your weekly postings.
Overall, I really enjoyed your blog and the amazing work and effort you put into this project!! 😊
That is such a great idea! I wish I had thought to include videos of me actually learning the sign, that would have been great to see in the future. It wouldn't have worked for some weeks but it would have been great to see for the alphabet and the numbers.
Hi Jasman! I loved the idea of your project! What an amazing topic to learn about and a useful one for both everyday life and for your future teaching practice!
Star 1: I really liked the different ways you used to express informtion within your blog! Using both text and visual components when explaining certain content (i.e., cerain sign language words and phrases) was really nice, especially for those who are visual learners!
Star 2: I also really liked how you broke down your research, so that those reading your blog could learn sign language with you! Your combination of teaching your readers and documenting your own experiences learning sign language was extremely engaging. It made be want to come back for more after each post!
Wish: It is clear that you put a ton of work within this blog and your research! Though, one thing that I would have liked to have had is a resource list of where you were getting your information on learning sign language from. Your blog has gotten me interest in learning sign language myself and a resource list would have been great to know where to start myself!
Overall, you have an amazing blog and I really enjoyed reading through it!
Hey Grace, I wish I had thought to include the resources at the end of the blog. I saw your blog and it was amazing how you included a reference list at the bottom. I will see if I am able to include them, thank you so much for the suggestion!
Thank you for following me on this journey and what a great journey it has been. There have been many ups and many downs on my learning path and I have learned a lot about sign language. I still cannot get over the fact that I learned the ASL alphabet! This is nowhere near the end of my journey and my current plans are to continue learning sign language until I am able to communicate in it properly. Once I able to communicate in sign language, I will see where I will go from there. - Jasman Nagra Check this out : My TED Talk My Project Reflection My Product
This is week 10 of my Genius Hour Project. This week the focus was to review all the signs I have learned up-to-date, which I have to say was not easy as I learned around ~300 signs. All of the words I have learned during this project! The Review Process The review process was very difficult as there were a lot of signs I had to review. I started off by first making a file of all the words I have learned so far in sign language. Then I went through all the words and checked to see which signs I remembered and which ones I had forgotten. Spoiler alert , I had forgotten most of them! At this point I decided to re-watch the videos where I originally learned these signs. I found this to be very helpful, but it is still is a LOT of signs and I am not confident that I will remember them all. In order to remember these signs I have to start using them in daily conversation which is something I am not doing (even though each week I say I will do this). I feel like I will have to create a ...
This is week 8 of my Genius Hour Project. This week I focused on continuing to learn words in sign language and to form a strategy so I can start to remember all the words that I have previously learned, as I sadly have forgotten most of them. I also continued with learning the numbers in sign language. All the words I learned this week Fingerspelling I've noticed that I have difficulty understanding signers when they fingerspell, as to me their normal fingerspelling speed is very fast. I need them to sign the words slow to understand what is being finger spelled. In addition, I recognized that while I know the sign alphabet I do not always recognize it when someone else is signing. I found some websites, Sign Language Forum and Hand speak to help me develop my receptive skills with fingerspelling. I did not have enough time to go over them this week, but I will be reviewing them next week. This is what the normal speed of sign language looks like to me, by the time I re...
