Genius Hour Project

This is week 10 of my Genius Hour Project. This week the focus was to review all the signs I have learned up-to-date, which I have to say was not easy as I learned around ~300 signs.  All of the words I have learned during this project! The Review Process The review process was very difficult as there were a lot of signs I had to review. I started off by first making a file of all the words I have learned so far in sign language. Then I went through all the words and checked to see which signs I remembered and which ones I had forgotten. Spoiler alert , I had forgotten most of them! At this point I decided to re-watch the videos where I originally learned these signs. I found this to be very helpful, but it is still is a LOT of signs and I am not confident that I will remember them all.   This is week 8 of my Genius Hour Project. This week I focused on continuing to learn words in sign language and to form a strategy so I can start to remember all the words that I have previously learned, as I sadly have forgotten most of them. I also continued with learning the numbers in sign language.  All the words I learned this week Fingerspelling I've noticed that I have difficulty understanding signers when they fingerspell, as to me their normal fingerspelling speed is very fast. I need them to sign the words slow to understand what is being finger spelled. In addition, I recognized that while I know the sign alphabet I do not always recognize it when someone else is signing. I found some websites, Sign Language Forum and Hand speak to help me develop my receptive skills with fingerspelling. This is week 7 of my Genius Hour project.  Last week  I looked into sentence structure for American Sign Language and this week I decided to further explore proper grammar of ASL.  This is all the words that I learned this week. I decided to include some of the words that I have already learned as I had forgotten the signs for some of them. Communication There is more than one correct way to communicate in ASL. The person (signer) has the choice of using more or fewer words depending on what the individual wants to emphasize or the context of their sentence.  For example :  " Are you married? " " You married? " " Married you? " " You married you? " The second " you " in " You married you? " represents " are ", another way to look at this sentence would be: " You married (are)- you? " This blew my mind, I was always confused why I would sign " you " twice in a sentence, especially wh

This is week 6 of my Genius Hour Project, and this week I tried to communicate in longer sentences, the keyword being tried . It was a nice goal to have for this week, but sadly a goal that I was not able to complete. I feel like I still need to learn more words in sign language and learn how to construct the sentences when signing before I can properly communicate in longer sentences.  All the new words that I learned in sign language this week Forgetfulness I've noticed that the signs I have previously learned are signs that I am now forgetting as I am not using them. To counter this I will try to watch more than one Bill Vicar video in a week. He repeats a lot of the previously learned signs, which can help with the memorization process. Welcome Back Everyone!! This is week five of my Genius Project and I feel like I accomplished a lot this week! This week I learned the alphabet, I learned some new signs according to categories and I answered some of my questions from last week. All of the new signs that I learned this week The Alphabet I've finally learnt the alphabet! And wow wow wow, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, probably due to the benefit of the ASL alphabet  video  I watched. They went extremely slow and there was a lot of repetition present in the video. My fingers felt sore after but it was totally worth it. The ASL alphabet always looked so complicated whenever I would see it and know that I know it, I am so happy that I was able to learn it!! Favourite Letter My favourite letter to sign has to be " K ", while my least favourite probably would be " M " and " N " . Fortunately for me, my name has both the letters " M " and " N "
